What is a Domain Name

This article explains what an Internet Domain name is, how one works, and how network address and domain names fit together On-Line.
What is a Domain Name
Do·Main-Name, domain-name is a noun : domain-names, is the plural of domain : domain is from Latin nōmen, literally meaning “name”, the part of a network address that identifies it belonging to a particular domain.
Domain names can be used to identify one or more IP addresses. For example, the domain name microsoft.com represents dozens of IP addresses. Domain names are also used to identify web pages www.example.com/

Every domain name or web-site has an end, ie : .com/ .co.uk/ .info/ etc. this indicates which level domain it’s name belongs to.
There are limited numbers of specific domain name extensions (ending’s) please see a very small number of examples below :-

.gov/ = Government / .edu/ = Educational institutions/
.org/ = Organizations/ (nonprofit) .mil/ = Military/
.com/ = commercial business/ .co.uk/ = United Kingdom/
.net/ = Network organizations/ .ca/ = Canada/ .th/ = Thailand/

See below a number of live web-site domain-name (web site address) extension examples  :-

www.boxmonitoredalarms.eu/  www.wikipedia.org/
www.dawntrade.co.uk/  www.marstoncourt.com/
www.ukdomain.info/  gmtimepieces.net/
boxsecurity.ltd.uk/  disappearhere.so/

Other dedicated extensions are available for more specific web-sites, see a number of examples below.

.mob/ = for mobile sites/ .travel/ = for travel sites/ .jobs/ =  for job sites etc.

Also because the internet is based on IP addresses, not just domain names, every web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) the server will translate domain names into IP addresses, what is an IP address?

DNS –  (Domain Name System) will translate the numerical or binary IP address ie: (47.113.49.87)  into the human-friendly website addresses like : disappearhere.so/
Most computers will have dynamic IP addresses, numerical IPv4 = 32 decimal (base-10) 4 groups of 4, =  (132.89.673.87) or a binary IPv6 = 128 bits – 8 groups of 4, hexadecimal (base-16) = (2001:cdba:0000:0000:0000:0000:3257:9652) , but In some cases, a whole house or office will share the same IP address.
